Firefighters are looked up to as heroes in any community. However, in New Orleans, even heroes get fed up with the long hours of work which include underpaid overtime. One factor that required them to render overtime work is the increase in call volume contrary to the decrease in manpower. There were about 800 of them in the city in 2010 compared to 500 today which is the lowest in the agency's 128-year history. The firefighters tried to resolve their issues with the Cantrell administration to no avail. They're hoping that the overtime boycott at the heart of Mardi Gras will get more action to their side.
